January 2026 Project Director Update
The Rust Foundation board meeting took place on December 9, 2025, and the highlights include the approval of the final strategic goals for 2026-2028, progress on Trusted Publishing, and the Foundation's 2026 budget. The meeting also discussed the increased usage of AWS-donated credits for serving requests to crates. io, and the Foundation is working on short- and long-term solutions to address this issue.
Additionally, the Foundation's engineers have made progress on various projects, including GitLab support for Trusted Publishing, the Capslock capability analyzer, and crates. io's vulnerability scanning RFC. The RustConf visa letter request page, sponsorship prospectus, and CFP are now live, allowing for more time for travel planning.
The training program initiative proposed launching a Foundation accreditation program for companies providing Rust training, and the board approved. The Board also discussed and approved the Foundation's 2026 budget. Developers can expect significant updates and developments in the Rust programming language, including project goals, hiring, and new features.
